The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has issued a handbook providing guidance for federal agencies on effective and efficient participation in tribal consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The handbook, created by the Advisory Council’s Native American Program, provides valuable guidance for consulting with Indian tribes in those cases where a federal project may impact Native American historic properties. The handbook clarifies the federal responsibility for tribal consultation and provides a step-by-step explanation of the Section 106 process. The handbook addresses consultation as it relates to projects located both of -- and on -- tribal lands and provides tools and tips to increase the overall effectiveness of consultation with Indian tribes.
