621 Explore Funding Mechanisms for Supporting Tribal Consultation that is not Conducted on a Project by Project Basis
Focus Area Status Cost Timeframe
Tribal Consultation Unmet Unknown Unknown
Scope

The NDDOT has adopted a tribal consultation mechanism that relies on regular meeting of a Tribal Consultation Committee, which is composed of representatives of many tribes. We discuss many projects, as well as issues of importance that are not project related. There is currently no good mechanism of FHWA monetary reimbursement for this type of consultation, which means the consultation relies on 100% state funding. This manner of consultation is superior in the eyes of all participants in terms of being economically and time efficient, effective, meaningful consultation, and a solid foundation on which to build lasting, positive relationships among participating agencies, tribes, and people.
